A tap dripping about once a second gets through somewhere in the order of twenty thousand litres a year. Fast enough to run a thin stream and it is far more than that. On a hot tap you are also paying to heat every litre, which is why hot taps are the ones worth fixing first.
Usually because the seat the washer sits against is pitted or scored, so the new washer cannot make a seal. The seat needs resurfacing, or in a worn tap body it means the tap itself is done. It can also happen if the wrong washer size or material was fitted.
A washer tap is the older style where you turn the handle several times and a rubber washer presses onto a seat. A ceramic disc or quarter turn tap moves from off to full on in a quarter turn, using two ceramic discs instead of a washer. Washer taps get a new washer, ceramic taps get a new cartridge. Different parts, similar job.
Most mixers are repairable. The cartridge is the usual culprit and they are replaceable on nearly all the major brands. Where it gets harder is cheap imported tapware with no parts available, and in that case replacing the tap is the only sensible path. We will tell you which one you have before you spend anything.
You can on a standard washer tap, if you shut the water off first and have the right size washer. Where people come unstuck is overtightening and damaging the seat, which turns a five dollar fix into a new tap, or finding the tap is a ceramic cartridge type and not a washer at all. If it is still dripping after your go, the seat is usually the reason.
Water hammer. The water column stops suddenly and the shock travels back through the pipework. It can be loose pipes that need clipping, a worn washer, high mains pressure, or a missing arrestor. It is worth sorting, because the repeated shock loosens fittings and eventually causes a leak somewhere.
If it is only one tap, nine times out of ten it is a blocked aerator at the spout, full of sediment or scale. Unscrewing and cleaning it fixes it. If every tap in the house has dropped off, it is something on the main, and that is a different job.
