Nearly always one of two parts. The inlet valve is not shutting off when the cistern is full, so it keeps topping up, or the outlet seal at the bottom of the cistern has perished and water is trickling into the pan. Both are inexpensive parts and a quick replacement.
A slow trickle can run through tens of thousands of litres a year without you noticing anything except the bill. A visibly running one is far worse. It is usually the cheapest plumbing fault to fix and the one with the fastest payback.
A plunger is worth one honest attempt, with a proper flange plunger rather than a flat sink one. What we would avoid is chemical drain cleaner, which rarely clears a toilet blockage and makes the job unpleasant and more dangerous for whoever has to open it up afterwards. If the plunger does not do it in a few goes, stop flushing and call us.
Usually a failed pan connector or seal between the pan and the drain. Sometimes it is condensation in a humid bathroom, and occasionally a hairline crack in the ceramic. It needs looking at either way, because water sitting under a pan gets into the floor.
Repair if the ceramic is sound and the parts are available, which covers most units. Replace if the pan or cistern is cracked, the parts are obsolete, or you are on an old single flush unit, where the water you save with a dual flush pays back a fair chunk of the cost over time.
Repeat blockages in the same toilet usually point at something beyond the pan. Common causes are tree roots in the sewer line, a partially collapsed pipe, a poor fall on the drain, or something solid lodged further down that catches everything after it. We can put a camera down the line and find out rather than clearing the same blockage every few months.
Yes. They are behind a panel with an access plate, usually under the flush button. Most of the common faults, inlet valves, outlet valves and flush mechanisms, are replaceable through that opening without touching the wall.
Some Melbourne water retailers offer a concession or leak allowance if you have had an unusually high bill caused by a leak that you have since repaired. It is worth ringing your retailer and asking, and keeping the invoice from the repair, because they will generally want proof the leak was fixed.
